Well that was nice!
Not a hint of sarcasm with that statement! That felt like one of the most complete games the Broncos have played in a long time. The defense did their job and the offense did theirs. While the box score may not look pretty, the game sure did.
It didn't start that way however. The Broncos defense did a good job forcing a three-and-out. The Broncos offense responded by throwing an interception. The Dolphins immediately capitalized with a touchdown. It looked like it was going to be a long Sunday for the Broncos and that Drew Lock was going to be in for another rough game. But then, something happened.
The Broncos offense finally got something going. They began working down the field and utilized their strengths! THEY RAN THE BALL! They used great play action completions to get Drew Lock in a rhythm, Lock made some great athletic plays and the Broncos scored touchdowns! Melvin Gordon ran for two touchdowns, nearly a third. But he fumbled the ball, giving the Dolphins one last chance, down 20-13 in the 4th quarter. Thankfully, Justin Simmons made a game saving interception, sealing a much needed win for the Broncos.
The defense laid out a masterful gameplan. They pressured Tua Tagovailoa constantly, sacking him six times. They shut down Miami's run game and forced their offense into a bad position. Eventually, Tua was benched for Ryan Fitzpatrick in the 4th. But the defense locked it down and secured a win. This was Vic Fangio at his best, and the coaching staff as a whole did a great job getting the win. They could've easily just folded after the initial mishap, but they fought through and got a win.
Speaking of fighting through, a lot of credit is due to Drew Lock for bouncing back after a terrible start. He started out 0/6 with an interception. After that, he was 18/24 for 270 yards. He did exactly what the team needed. He managed the offense and moved the ball down the field. A couple touchdowns would be nice, but he did his job to compliment the run game.
It's clear what the path to success is for the Broncos right now. Pat Shurmur called one of his best games. A good balance that made use of Lindsay and Gordon, while keeping the pressure off Drew Lock. Calling pistol made more use of the offense's talents. The Broncos need to build off this game and keep taking steps forward. Small steps, but important ones.
